Supporting social impact organisations
to use data and AI
effectively and ethically
Hello! My name is Tracey Li. I'm a freelancer who supports social impact organisations to use data and AI the right way.
By 'the right way', I mean in a way that contributes to purposeful outcomes, that is legal and ethical, and that makes practical sense in the operating environment. I take a holistic outcomes-driven approach that focuses on people and technology, together.
I'm a scientist and data scientist by training. I also have 10+ years of hands-on experience in data quality management, data governance and ethics, program/performance monitoring, capacity building, and what I can best describe as the rigorous application of common sense. My CV is here.
I've worked in Europe, America, Asia, and Africa with research labs, start-ups, local charities, and international NGOs. I'm very comfortable adapting to different environments. I'm also very familiar with the 'mission-driven but under-resourced' operating mode of many non-profits, and with the challenges of working in low-resource settings such as having limited access to infrastructure, equipment, and skilled staff. I find pragmatic ways to make progress with whatever resources are available. I currently live in Bristol, UK.
I can help you cut through the hype and jargon, and think critically about what's realistic, practical, and important in your environment
I'll support you to create and implement a framework that gives you the control and accountability that you need, without excessive bureaucracy
I'll show you how to break out of 'garbage in, garbage out' mode and get the right data to the right human or AI users, at the right times
I can support you to define the right metrics to measure the right things, then produce and analyse the right data to monitor those metrics
I can find actionable insights in your data, or patterns that you may want to investigate further
